"A book about foreign policy by a man who really knows something about foreign policy."-James Reston, New York Times Book Review He confronts the events and topics that have come to occupy American opinion in the last thirty years, including the development and significance of the Cold War, the escalation of the nuclear arms race, and the American involvement in Vietnam. This book, as the title tells us, is her story and probably not quite what we were expecting. Ames took a fancy to her and, eventually, at her suggestion, he proposed to her and they married and, at the beginning of the first book in the trilogy, had an almost seven year old son, though we only learned the boy’s name, Robby, in the second book. (And, if you have not read the first two, you should do so before reading this book.) Lila, as we have seen from both the perspective of John Ames, her (much older) husband, and from the perspective of the Boughton family, seems a relatively quiet, low-key woman, who suddenly turned up in Gilead, we do not know from where or why, and helped out in the church and in the Reverend Ames’ garden. If you have read the first two books in Marilynne Robinson’s Gilead trilogy, you will know who Lila Ames is. ![]() Home » USA » Marilynne Robinson » Lila Marilynne Robinson: Lila ![]() ![]() ![]() This children's edition of the bestseller Black and British: A Forgotten History is beautifully illustrated in full-colour with maps, portrait galleries, timelines, photos and portraits. The American Patriots were defeated by the British and they continued to revolt all across the empire. So much of The Inventor's Secret just felt so ridiculous and silly that it was difficult for me to get invested in the plot and characters. ![]() An alternate history, steampunk novel that explores what if the British won the Revolutionary War? Count me in! The major problem with The Inventor's Secret is that Cremer focuses on an illogical romance and plot and never really lets the steampunk elements fully take off. I wasn't a fan of Andrea Cremer's Nightshade series, but I decided to read The Inventor's Secret because I absolutely loved its premise. It is told in the perspectives of Fallon and Ben, which seems to be standard in a Colleen Hoover novel.
